  3. Work with KYOGI and the GIS technical community in Kentucky and nationally to identify a cost-effective and spatially appropriate one-zone projection in which to collect and/or disseminate the raster data layers of the KY Statewide Digital Basemap.

Status of the Single Zone Coordinate System

The GIAC Single Zone Subcommittee met on various occasions in the fall of 2000. These meetings resulted in the development of the Kentucky Single Zone Coordinate System of 1983, which was presented to and adopted by the GIAC during their full meeting on December 14, 2000. The subcommittee identified the following tasks required for the successful adoption and widespread use of the Single Zone projection:

  1. The promulgation of an administrative regulation officially defining and adopting the Kentucky Single Zone Coordinate System of 1983 as a recognized projection scheme for representing spatial data located within and reasonably near the boundary of the Commonwealth of Kentucky.
    • Status: This task was accomplished by the promulgation of 10 KAR 5:010 on August 15, 2001.
  2. The adoption of the Kentucky Single Zone Coordinate System by the National Geodetic Survey and the United States Geological Survey for use in their mapping and data products.
    • Status: The National Geodetic Survey has adopted the Kentucky Single Zone Coordinate System as State Plane Zone 1600. The Kentucky Single Zone is now published as the primary system in Kentucky for NGS data sheets as designated by "KY1Z".
  3. The inclusion of the Kentucky Single Zone Coordinate System of 1983 into the existing Kentucky Coordinate System of 1983 as defined by KRS 1:020 through legislative action.
    • Status: The GIAC has encouraged the Kentucky Association of Professional Surveyors to lobby for legislative action revising KRS 1:020 to include the Kentucky Single Zone Coordinate System of 1983. This task is pending as of April 19, 2002.
